Phil was named Senior Philanthropic Counsel for Duke University on July 1, 2016, after serving as the Assistant Vice President for Gift Planning since 2008. He joined Duke in January 2002 as the Director of Planned Giving. Phil also has served as President of Duke University Philanthropies, Inc. since 2006 and formerly as Vice President from 2004-2006. He is an attorney and his primary focus at Duke involves helping donors and their professional advisors understand and consider charitable gifts that require some measure of tax, legal, or financial planning. Phil’s work includes charitable gift and tax issues related to estates, trusts, life income gifts such as charitable gift annuities and charitable remainder trusts, real estate, closely held companies, partnerships, IRD assets, and other complex gift arrangements.

Jeremy Arkin

Jeremy works with donors and their advisors to explore gift strategies with complex tax and legal implications. He first came to Duke as Director of Endowment Administration. Prior to that, he was Vice President of Philanthropic Services at the Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta and a corporate lawyer at Troutman Sanders, LLP, in Atlanta. Jeremy received his law degree from UNC and his undergraduate degree from Haverford College. Jeremy is an active volunteer in the Durham community and grew up in nearby Greensboro, North Carolina.

Sarah K. Fish '82

Sarah was born and raised in Greensboro, North Carolina. She is a third generation Duke graduate and is responsible for handling the day-to-day administration of Duke's trust and gift annuity accounts. Sarah also manages estates in probate and is available to help donors developing new gift plans. Sarah has worked in the Office of Gift Planning at Duke since 1995. Prior to joining the staff, she was employed as a trust officer at North Carolina Trust Company. Sarah enjoys attending Duke football and basketball games, and she is an active volunteer in the Durham community.

Kristen Brown Smalley

Prior to joining Duke, Kristen was in private practice as an attorney, specializing in tax and nonprofit organizations, and then worked at Triangle Community Foundation, serving the legal, financial, and tax advisor communities. At Duke, she helps donors and their professional advisors meet philanthropic and financial goals. Kristen's areas of expertise include tax and structuring issues related to charitable gifts of complex assets. Kristen holds degrees from the University of Washington (B.A.), Gonzaga University School of Law (J.D., magna cum laude) and the Georgetown University Law Center (LL.M. in Tax, with honors). Kristen is currently an active member of and has held leadership positions in the Continuing Legal Education Committee for the North Carolina Bar Association's Estate Planning Section, the North Carolina Planned Giving Council and the Durham Orange Estate Planning Council.

Anne uses her more than five years of development experience to help donors identify strategies to give back to Duke in ways that best suit their individual needs and goals.

Anne loves her job because she believes that passionate people can truly change the world in big and small ways through their gifts. Applying this philosophy to her personal life, she and her husband support a child literacy program in India.

Prior to joining Duke, Anne managed corporate, foundation, and government fundraising for the Detroit Zoological Society. Anne earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Notre Dame and has spent time abroad in Cairo, Egypt.

Anne works with donors who are interested in making a charitable gift to Duke, and helps them navigate any tax or legal implications associated with the gifts. Prior to joining the gift planning team, Anne served as the Assistant Dean of Academic Advising at Duke Law as part of the Law School’s Offices of Academic and Student Affairs, and also worked in the Law School’s Career and Professional Development Office.

Earlier in her career, Anne worked for the college fund at The University of Chicago and practiced employee benefits law at firms in Chicago and Raleigh. Anne received her law degree from the University of Chicago Law School, graduating with honors, and her undergraduate degree from Duke. Anne and her family enjoy Duke Athletics events, and she actively volunteers in the Durham community.

Alyssa Alegre

Alyssa oversees marketing and communications, events, and special initiatives for the Office of Gift Planning. She works closely with donors who are featured in Duke Magazine, the Blueprints blog and other publications. She also works closely with development teams, schools, and alumni volunteers as part of our comprehensive reunion efforts.  Alyssa has previous work experience with a private law firm, several non-profit organizations, and a regional bank. She received her undergraduate degree and Masters of Business Administration from Niagara University. Alyssa joined the Gift Planning team in 2007, after relocating from Buffalo, New York. When she is not in the office, she enjoys being outdoors, running, and chasing after her twin daughters. 

Jane Lee Heuser

Jane is a native of Chicago, Illinois, and moved to beautiful North Carolina in 2005. She is a graduate of the University of Illinois and joined the Gift Planning team in 2012. Jane is responsible for handling the day-to-day administration of Duke's trust and gift annuity accounts. She also manages estates for Duke and works with donors in developing their charitable plans.

Prior to joining Duke, Jane managed trusts and estates at a small law firm and was a vice president with The Northern Trust Company in Chicago. Jane loves to travel and is conversant in Cantonese and French. She keeps busy with her husband and two teenagers and is an active volunteer in Durham and Chapel Hill.

Leslie is a native Carolinian—born in South Carolina and raised in Durham. She is a graduate of North Carolina Wesleyan College and joined the Gift Planning team in 2002. Leslie is our data guru providing our reports, statistics and analysis as needed. She also supports the Trust and Estates group with their many administrative tasks. Prior to joining the team, Leslie worked in human resources and as a bank teller. Leslie has a young daughter who is her constant source of joy and makes her home in Raleigh.

Cathy handles day-to-day administration support for the Gift Planning team and serves as the first point of contact for guests and donors. She also assists the gift officers with travel, scheduling and internal communications. Cathy considers Birmingham, Alabama as home although she has lived at various times in eight different locations. She holds a B.S. degree in Business Administration from Jacksonville State University.

Kyle Aldred

Kyle serves as a staff assistant, supporting the Trust and Estate Administration team and the assistant director. He assists with the day-to-day trust, estate, and gift annuity administration and other duties. Kyle is a recent graduate of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro where he received a B.S. degree in Accounting. He is originally from Woodbridge, Virginia, then moved to Benson, North Carolina in the 6th grade, and now calls Durham “home.” He enjoys hiking, fishing, and spending time with his family.

Brandy Chieco

Brandy is from Graham, North Carolina and graduated with a B.A. degree in English from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Most recently, she worked as a chiropractic assistant in Durham and her prior experience includes stints as a human resources manager in her hometown and a personal banker at Wells Fargo in Chapel Hill. Brandy and her husband, Chris, live in Durham with their cat, Chloe. She’s a fan of theatre and somewhat of a foodie, as every Durhamite should be.

In his role as Senior Development Counsel, Mike provides strategic gift planning assistance across the university, working closely with leadership in University Development and across the schools and units. Mike also serves as University Development's liaison with University Counsel, Treasury, Endowment/Investment Administration, and DUMAC, Inc. Mike returned to Duke in 2008 after serving as Director of Development Support and Senior Philanthropic Advisor for Bank of New York Mellon's Charitable Gift Services group. Prior to this, Mike served as Director and Senior Philanthropic Counsel of U.S. Trust Company's Planned Giving Services group. From 1994 to 2001, Mike served as Duke University's Director of Planned Giving. Mike received a B.A. from Yale, an M.B.A. from the University of Miami, a J.D. from Duke Law School, and an LL.M. (Taxation) from Villanova Law School. He is a Board Certified Specialist in Estate Planning and Probate Law in North Carolina and is a former president of the North Carolina Planned Giving Council.

Joseph W. Tynan, Director of Gift Planning in Duke Medicine Development, has been with the Medical Center since 1995. Prior to that, he was Director of Planned Giving at Rockefeller University, a biomedical research institute and graduate university in New York City. Joe has 21 years of experience in the trust and estate and planned giving fields. He received a bachelor's degree, magna cum laude, from Iona College in New Rochelle, N.Y., and a J.D. from St. John's University School of Law in Jamaica, N.Y.
