With 19 years of experience in foundation work, Beth leads the Office of Foundation Relations. She oversees foundation strategy in collaboration with her team and colleagues in the schools and units, and she coordinates the University’s relationships with major foundation funders, including The Duke Endowment. Beyond strategy, Beth specializes in astute edits and budgetary wizardry. Originally from Montana, Beth earned a BA from Yale and an MPA from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  She and her husband, Duke English Professor Tom Ferraro, live in Durham and have two grown children.

Vera Luck

Associate Director, Foundation Relations
(919) 681-0404
vera.luck@duke.edu

Vera seeks foundation support for the sciences and engineering. Whether it’s mathematics, biomedical engineering, brain sciences, or chemistry, she’s fascinated by the far-ranging questions Duke faculty pursue and enjoys helping them prepare competitive proposals for funding. Vera has worked at Duke since 2001, with previous experience in University Development’s Principal Gifts and Prospect Research offices. Outside of the office, she practices yoga, reads, volunteers, and spends time with her family.

Carol Vorhaus

Associate Director, Foundation Relations
(919) 681-1967
carol.vorhaus@duke.edu

Carol is a seasoned development professional with more than 16 years of experience across all sectors of fundraising. She likes working with faculty on foundation proposals and can skillfully guide new and experienced fund seekers through foundation research and proposal development to winning grants. At Duke she is responsible for faculty in the arts and humanities and manages the Duke relationship with the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. When she’s not at work, Carol can be found churning up the pool or hiking the byways in NC and beyond.

Alexandra de Havilland

Assistant Director, Foundation Relations
(919) 681-0475
alexandra.de.havilland@duke.edu

Alexandra assists faculty in public policy, law, and the social sciences.  She views her role in Foundation Relations as equal parts educator, networker, editor, and coach, and she uses each of those skills as she works with faculty members on developing proposals for funders. Prior to joining Duke, Alexandra led a non-profit organization that provided comprehensive services to people living with HIV/AIDS. Outside of the office, you’ll see Alexandra biking around campus to get to meetings, running laps around East Campus, or at the Duke Hospital volunteering with the Pet Therapy Program.

Steve Murray

Assistant Director, Foundation Relations
(919) 613-1756
stephen.murray@duke.edu

Steve works with science and engineering faculty and, being incurably curious, loves learning about their varied research and helping them pursue foundation funding for their work. Prior to moving to Durham and Duke, Steve led all of the fundraising activities for the Food Bank of the Albemarle, a regional hunger relief organization serving 15 northeast NC counties. When he’s not working, Steve is usually playing his guitar, adding to his vinyl collection, spending time with his wife and dogs, or perfecting his BBQ technique.

Nancy Hillsman

Assistant Director, Research and Stewardship
(919) 681-0469
nancy.hillsman@duke.edu

With 15 years of experience in Foundation Relations, Nancy heads up efforts in prospect research, stewardship, data management and analysis. She has also held positions in Alumni & Development Records and Law Alumni Affairs, adding up to nearly 30 years at Duke. She enjoys using her wide-ranging expertise to answer thorny questions such as “How many corporate dollars have come to Duke, combining grants and gifts?” or “Is the Midtown Raleigh Alliance a corporation?” Nancy also loves to cook for her family, her friends, and her work family.

Kylie Meyer Snyder

Research and Stewardship Coordinator
(919) 684-0806
kylie.snyder@duke.edu

Kylie is team leader for The Duke Endowment buildings and endowment annual stewardship report and collaborates with Carol on stewardship for the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. She also works with the president’s office on foundation acknowledgement letters. Kylie enjoys the team environment of Foundation Relations and has been at Duke University for nine years. When not at work, she likes to read and hang with her three rescue dogs.

Lightsey Darst

Research and Stewardship Coordinator
(919) 681-0477
lightsey.darst@duke.edu

Lightsey helps faculty find foundations that fit their projects. She enjoys her work as a foundation sleuth, putting funders in context with recent grants, philanthropic philosophy, and Duke history. Prior to joining Duke, she worked as an arts organizer, writing instructor, and dance critic. Outside work, you can find her writing poetry at a coffee shop, organizing local dance events, or playing in a park with her family.

Angela Crews

Development Associate
(919) 681-0468
angela.crews@duke.edu

Angela keeps her Foundation Relations colleagues in line by managing all staff calendars and appointments, the office budget, and anything else office related. She also manages the Trent Memorial Endowment Fund for faculty and staff across the university. When she’s not shepherding Foundation Relations, Angela keeps busy organizing her family, her colleagues at other jobs, and her corner of the universe in general.
